What is the degree of dust and moisture protection ip67?

IP67 is a code designation used to indicate the IP rating of equipment against water and dust ingress into the enclosure. Access to the main parts in the equipment is provided by an enclosure that meets IP standards. It is subjected to tests of dust and moisture protection standards, moisture protection is carried out during the same tests, such testing is called IP classification.

How to decrypt IP

Methods for classifying technical devices are carried out in accordance with international rules (GOST), called the "IP standard", the designations assigned to them show the IP degree of protection of the shell. To understand what IP protection is, you just need to translate this abbreviation from English.

IP67 ingress protection standard

A code that has the characters “IP” stands for “ip” (it means that Ingress protection in translation is “protection against penetration”). Such a code (security standard) can be seen in the documents for any product:

  • high-tech equipment;
  • electrical engineering;
  • modern smartphones, etc.

If the consumer has purchased the product, he can always find out the level of protection of the case for the possibility of its operation in a room with a high content of dust or humidity. The device is guaranteed to be reliable if the documents indicate the degree of protection IP67 (the decoding of the first two characters is clear). And what do the numbers mean?

What do the numbers in IP67 mean?

The degree classification includes various symbols. The higher the indicator, the better the product and the higher its dust and water resistance. All characteristics reflected in the digital code can be seen in special tables. They are more often used by specialists, but in the age of the Internet, access to such data is not limited.

First digit

The first digit determines the strength that the shell can provide:

  • when a person has access to dangerous parts;
  • the equipment itself, located under the shell.

The designations of the first digit of the code and the description of the value can be seen in Table 1:

Code (first digit)The level of human protection and reliability against foreign objects
zerowithout protection
1not protected from conscious action
2not accessible to fingers
3code for power tools where foreign objects (solid) larger than 2.5 mm can get in
4means wires, bolts, nails and other objects larger than 1 mm
5
  • with a slight ingress of dust, the equipment will not fail;
  • safe from contact
6dust-tight shell, - maximum reliability from contact

Second digit

The second digit indicates the reliability against moisture penetration and its harmful effects on the performance of the equipment. The characteristic of the second digit of the code is deciphered according to table 2:

Code (second digit)Moisture protection level
zerounreliable
1safe from vertically dripping water
2vertically flowing liquid will not affect functionality when the device is deflected by 15°
3protected from rain, as well as raindrops and splashes falling at an angle of up to 60° vertically
4protected from splashes coming from any direction to the device
5secure against water jets coming from any direction
6the ability to stay in sea water and under strong water currents
7the device is waterproof, water resistance is ensured with short-term immersion to a depth of up to 1 m
8
  • full waterproofness when in the water for any amount of time;
  • operability in conditions of water ingress at constant underwater pressure

So for a household electrical outlet, the specified protection class means "IP" (meaning that the outlet is protected from penetration), with code 2 according to the first table and code 2 according to the second (IP22) - the device is protected from penetration by hands, and is also not subject to vertically pouring water. And the IP67 code marks waterproof and dustproof devices.
